Best neighborhoods in Cancún
6 areas in Cancún, Mexico — what each one feels like, who it suits, and roughly what it costs.
- Zona Hotelera ($$) — Barrier island, all-inclusive wall Best for Beach resorts. Caribbean on one side, lagoon on the other, one road between. A tourist strip rather than a neighbourhood — few people live here. Getting around: R1 and R2 buses + taxis
- Puerto Cancún ($$) — Marina, gated new build Best for Long stays. Marina restaurants and a mall, between Centro and the strip. Where residents with money moved — secure and bland. Getting around: Car; buses on the avenue
- Centro ($) — Working city, taquerías, markets Best for Budget + real food. Half the price of the strip, and where the tacos actually are. The real Cancún: markets, offices, and no beach. Getting around: Local buses + walkable
- Isla Blanca ($) — Sandbar, kitesurf, nothing else Best for Kitesurfing. A thin sandbar with lagoon flats and almost no buildings. Off-grid by Cancún standards; bring supplies. Getting around: Car essential
- Playa Mujeres ($$) — New resorts, empty sand Best for Quiet luxury. Wide, uncrowded beach twenty minutes north of the noise. Still mostly construction and golf. Getting around: Car or resort shuttle
- Puerto Juárez ($) — Ferry docks, calm shore Best for Isla Mujeres access. The Isla Mujeres ferry leaves from your doorstep. Quiet northern edge; workaday and unglamorous. Getting around: Ferry + local buses
